The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission wants former Kasarani legislator Elizabeth Ongoro and 18 others prosecuted over a ghost project that has seen the taxpayers lose KSh48.9 million.
Already, detectives have nabbed former District Development Officer, Kefa Omanga Omoi and former Constituency Development Fund committee member – Jecinta Akoth Opondi.
Through a statement issued Thursday, EACC said the money in question was supposedly to pay suppliers in a fraudulent procurement process, for a non-existent Kasarani Girls High School.
EACC chief executive officer Twalib Mbarak said the money was paid to accounts belonging to different individuals and five entities, all associated to the National Government Constituency Development Fund patron and committee members.
“The Commission established that the award of the contract for the construction of the school was made without due regard to the procurement laws, the school does not and that payments were made to different individuals and Companies associated to the National Government Constituency Development Fund patron and committee members for services not rendered,” he said.
The 21 suspects will face nine charges, among them misappropriation of public funds, abuse of office, conflict of interest and unlawful acquisition of public property.
The other counts include engaging in a project without prior planning, fraudulent acquisition of public property, dealing with suspect property contrary to Section47(2) of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act, willful failure to comply with the law relating to procurement and engaging in a project without proper planning.
They have been asked to present themselves to EACC headquarters at the Integrity Centre.
