Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed maybe getting her head into the murky waters of football elections in what would be a clear attempt to meddle into the process, which has been flagged as irregular by the sports registrar and is the subject of a petition before the Sports Disputes Tribunal.

With the ruling by the SDT set Tuesday, 3 December 2019, Kurunzi can reveal the CS met Football Kenya Federation president Nick Mwendwa at her office just hours before the tribunal gives its verdict.

Two applications – 21 of 2019 by Jared Nyauma Ondieki and 24 of 2019 (jointly by Sam Nyamweya, Lordvick Aduda, Moses Akaranga, Moses ole Magelo and Angeline Elijah) – are before the tribunal seeking to have the Electoral Board declared improperly constituted and the entire illegally premised.

Mwendwa and his delegation is then said to have headed to Registrar Rose Wasike’s office switch “blessings” from the CS Mohammed.

The federation defied the Registrar and went ahead to conduct county elections on 23 November, in contravention of an order by the SDT that nominations received by the Electoral Board would not be valid until the matter was heard and determined.

Wasike had, through a letter to FKF a fortnight ago pointed out how the process had not met the requirements of the Sports Act, specifically rules 17 and 20 of the Sports Registrar 2016.

A petition for contempt is already before the tribunal which is due to make its determination Tuesday afternoon.

It is understood CS Mohammed is applying pressure on the Registrar to validate the polls by accepting returns from the exercise which stakeholders have described as irregular, citing contravention of the Constitution of Kenya 2010, Sports Act 2013, FIFA Statutes and the world governing body’s standard electoral code.

Should the tribunal uphold the petitions against the process in the ruling, it would deal a major blow to Mwendwa and put CS Mohammed on the firing line for her attempted influence on the polls.

Mwendwa has recently been at loggerheads with Principal Secretary Peter Kaberia over lack of proper accountability for hundreds of millions given to the FKF from the Sports Fund.

Whether this new revelation of the apparent bed fellowship between the CS and Mwendwa is evidence of a rift between Kaberia and his boss Mohammed can only be known in a matter of time.
