Frank Lampard’s uncle Harry Redknapp has said the Derby manager is on the brink of a sensational return to Chelsea
Sportsmail reported on Sunday that the Blues have stepped up their chase for Lampard following Maurizio Sarri’s appointment at Juventus
And Redknapp believes his nephew is in line to take over at Stamford Bridge.
I think it will be a major surprise if he does not get the job. It looks to me as though it will happen,’ he told talkSPORT on Monday morning.
‘It’s brilliant for him. A shame for Derby. He has gone up there and done a good job.
‘I’m sure Derby loved having him there, the fans and everybody so it will be a shame for them, the club, the fans, but for Chelsea it is a great move for them.
‘He is idolised at Chelsea. He is a genuine legend there. He knows the game, he knows what it’s about, he has a touch of class and I think he will be great.’
Lampard just missed out on Premier League promotion with Derby last campaign after losing 2-1 to Aston Villa in the Championship play-off final.
The club is braced for an official approach from the Blues, who would have to pay £4million to buy the former Chelsea midfielder out of his deal.
