Gor Mahia, Homeboys,Sofapaka register huge wins in KPL matches

Despite their poor outing in Algeria in their CAF assignment, Gor Mahia returned back to their winning ways in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) with a 2-1 win over Kenya Commercial Bank in a tough encounter staged at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Sunday 22 September.

Gor Mahia, with a game in hand, scored through newly signed Ghanaian forward Francis Afriyie and midfielder Lawrence Juma.

Bulky Enock Agwanda who joined the bankers from Sony Sugar pulled one back for his new side from the spot.

Afriyie opened the scoring for the KPL  champions after 31 minutes following a poorly cleared corner that  met a waiting Juma at the edge of the box to slam it home  amid thunderous cheers  from Gor fans.

The Bankers got a life line in the 37th minute when Agwanda stepped up to score from the spot after Gor Mahia’s defender Wellington Ochieng fouled speedy Steven Waruru in the box to hand KCB a penalty.

The win for K’Ogalo came with a heavy prize after Afriyie was seriously injured in the 36th minute. He had to be stretchered off, to be replaced by Samuel Onyango.

Gor felt cheated in the 60th minute when a goal scored by Samuel Onyango was disallowed after the player was adjudged to have handled the ball.

Gor Mahia settle at third on the standings, with six points from two matches, one point below the leading  duo of Kakamega Homeboyz and Bandari FC who picked wins over Kariobangi Sharks and Sony Sugar respectively.

Elsewhere,Kakamega Homeboyz FC showed scant respect to visiting Kariobangi Sharks FC  with a  3-0 demolition at the Bukhungu Stadium.

Kennedy Onyango gave Homeboyz the match opener after 23 minutes after pouncing on a through pass from David Onyango to slam home with a rasping shot.

Old horse Allan Wanga spoilt Sharks afternoon in the 52nd minute with a towering header from a deliciously struck free-kick by Festus Okiring. He later added the second from the spot after a handball in the Sharks 18-yard area.

At the Narok County Stadium, Brian Nyakan was on a brace as Sofapaka burried visiting Chemelil Sugar FC 4-0. Former Gor Mahia forward Timona Wanyonyi was the first on the mark in the 28th minute followed by an Elli Asieche penalty in the 60th min.

The 2-0 lead then set the stage for Brian Nyakan whose brace in the 77th and 93rd minutes earned Batoto Ba Mungu a huge week 3 win.

Tusker, the 2016 champions were made to struggle before coming from behind to dispatch hosts Zoo FC 2-1.

Earlier at the Kenyatta Stadium.Western Stima shocked their hosts Posta Rangers with a 1-0 victory to register their first win of the 2019/20 season.
