Safaricom PLC Thursday named Peter Ndegwa, Diageo PLC’s Managing Director, its Chief Executive Officer effective April 2020.

Ndegwa will take over from Michael Joseph who was appointed interim Chief Executive Officer of Safaricom following Bob Collymore’s death in July.

Nicholas Nganga, the Chairperson of Safaricom’s board said the appointee has over two decades of experience in the financial services sector.

“Peter brings a wealth of experience in General Management, Commercial and Business Strategy, Sales and Finance Operations, having spent over 25 years in various roles within the Financial Services and Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sectors in Africa and Europe,” a statement announcing Ndegwa’s appointment read.

“In his current role, Peter oversees the operations of Diageo PLC in 50 countries in Western and Eastern Europe, Russia, Middle East and North Africa region. He had previously served for seven years as CEO in Guinness Nigeria PLC and Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC, where he transformed the two operations to deliver a double-digit growth by investing in people, introducing new brands and reorganising the businesses.”

Ndegwa has also worked locally with East Africa Breweries Limited where he was a senior executive for eight years.

He served as the Group Chief Finance Officer, Group Strategy Director, Sales Director, and as an Executive Director on the EABL Board, Safaricom said, adding he was part of the team that saw the EABL business more than doubled in value – and winning the coveted Most Respected Business Award in East Africa for five years in a row.

Ndegwa’s appointment ends speculation over the future of the telco which was in final stages of picking Collymore’s successor when he succumbed to cancer in July.

Joseph, the company’s former CEO who currently serves as Chairperson of the Kenya Airways board, was picked to head the telco to ensure continuity.
