Weight loss awards: How KPA is encouraging healthy living

Kenya Ports Authority says they have a strong commitment to ensuring their staff lead a healthy lifestyle that early this year an idea was mooted by the Medical Services Department to help curb overweight and obesity in our organisation. PHOTO/COURTESY

Nursing Officer, Elizabeth Weja is the winner of the inaugural Kenya Ports Authority weight loss competition.

Elizabeth from the Medical Services Department was declared the winner after registering a total 31.70 Kgs weight loss in the six-month programme dubbed KPA Simply Healthy Season One.

She was followed by Sharon Orimba and Liza Nguti of the Human Resources Department who lost 16.80 Kgs and 13.10 Kgs respectively during the period.

Support Officer, Dorothy Buru of ICT Department with a total weight loss of 13.05 Kgs took the fourth position and was followed by Clerical Assistant Khatib Mwinyi of Medical Services who lost 10.90 Kgs.

Cumulatively, the Department of Medical Services emerged at position one with a sum of 73.7 Kgs, followed by the Legal Services and the Human Resources Departments with 57.4 Kgs and 55.3 Kgs respectively.

Speaking during the announcement of the winners at a ceremony held in Mombasa, General Manager in charge of human resource and administration – Daniel Ogutu, said the Simply Healthy programme with a tagline “The Path to Better Living” demonstrated the Authority’s commitment to staff wellness.

“It is because of this strong commitment that early this year an idea was mooted by the medical services department to help curb overweight and obesity in our organisation,” said the GM.
